“Democracies Don’t End Well”

That pearl of wisdom, democracies don’t end well, came from none other than renowned political philosopher Rob Schneider.  I came across this nugget in my twitter feed about two and a half years ago from a radio interview that Rob Schneider was doing to promote a stand up bit in Philly.  I moved it into long term storage and only recently had time to go back and look at it; to remind myself why I was saving it in the first place. Long time readers of this blog may know that one of the first posts I did when starting this blog was a review of Rob Schneider’s then new TV show, ¡Rob!  The review wasn’t exactly a kind one and the show lasted only 8 episodes before mercifully being put down.  However the review I wrote lived on.  For years, it showed up as my second most popular post (beaten only be the one I wrote on my first time with a male dental hygienist) and low carb frozen Lean Cuisine meals.

But getting back to Schneider’s observation; no, it’s by no means original.  In fact in an earlier age (meaning virtually every other time period until the modern era) it was considered a truism.  Other thinkers had expressed the same thought.

“A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.”  Alexander Fraser Tytler

Of course, this wasn’t merely an enlightenment sentiment.  The ancients thought much the same thing.

Dictatorship naturally arises out of democracy, and the most aggravated form of tyranny and slavery out of the most extreme liberty.”Plato

The founding fathers were explicit in their disdain for democracy.  They intended to create a Republic, not a democracy.

“Democracy is the most vile form of government. … democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property: and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.”  -James Madison

“We are a Republic. Real Liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of Democracy.”  -Alexander Hamilton

“A simple democracy is the devil’s own government.” –Benjamin Rush

Can you imagine a contemporary American political figure making such an observation in public?  He would be outside the bounds of decent conversation.

That’s unfortunate because now seems like a good time to have a public conversation about it. I’ve never, in my life time, seen the Democrats in general and liberals in particular, reject the outcome of an election and plot to overturn it.  Starting with the rubric of fake news, the Russians-did-it, Calexit, The attempted Electoral College coup, boycotting the inauguration and now CNN gives a step by step guide on how to assassinate Trump and keep Democrats in charge.

This is CNN.

If ever there was a news story that perfectly expressed the wish that the heart makes over at CNN, it’s this one; explaining how they could  overturn the election and keep the Democrats in power for the next four…ah who am I kidding?  To keep them in power forever.  In fact, I was very nearly holding my breath until the inauguration was over, thinking that a CNN cap wearing assassin might try to do some damage.

We’re in uncharted territory here.  Half the country, including its major institutions such as the media and academia, flat out rejects the results of the election.  The last time Democrats rejected the results of a Presidential election we had a civil war.  Although I don’t see one on the offing yet, the precedent being established here is a dangerous one.

For all of his flaws, Obama was not the guy to tap his scepter and decide to remain in power “for the good of the country.”  But  we’ve just raised a generation of snowflakes whose political identity has been inculcated in an environment in which every authority source in their world (the media. social media, and academia mostly) have spent the past two months telling them that the election was illegitimate and concocting schemes to try to subvert it.

So would the next Democratic President (and there will be one) give up power to a non-establishment Republican?  Or establishment one for that matter? Would the country follow him, or reject him as an American Caesar, trying to overturn a Democratic government?  There is every reason to think that our peaceful transfer of power days are coming to a close.

Well Mr. Franklin, and Mr. Schneider, we’ve had a Republic, and it looks like there is a possibility we won’t be keeping it after all.

  1. Can’t we just enjoy this peaceful transfer of power one more time? The answer to our problem is that the people receive the Word of God I hope for that and if we do And have ears to hear And do it; worshipping the Lord who brings peace for He is the Prince of Peace we will have more years to come

    • If it weren’t for reality…and I mean the real one not the ‘’alt-fact’ bubble you’ve created for yourself, I too would be a little shaken or sad at the reaction of the dems on Trump’s election..But considering what Rep did for O’s Entire presidency.. Hell even Trump himself has a great twofer here in his, Revolution’ tweet on election night those many years ago..

      https://mediamatters.org/blog/2012/11/07/trump-tweets-a-call-for-revolution-after-obama/191191

(Love the irony here don’t you? Guess he wants a revolution since HRC beat him..nah,now he says we’re an electoral system)

Anyway..I guess I’m just numb to vitriol..after watching Republicans for the last 8 years who isn’t…and going forward in this reply ..this is not a ‘’well you did it-tit for tat”..but more of a moment of perspective… 😉

I’ll Start worrying about Cnn when they start donating millions to Republican campaigns..and Putting Beck and Hannity front and center to call Obama a racist.socialist.Marxist and most of all a Kenyan not even born here like Fox news did..ya know that Major media entity you guys have..

      http://mediamatters.org/research/2012/09/12/foxs-four-year-campaign-to-make-obama-a-one-ter/189834#section1

I mean the way a Major media outlet pounded the birther issue into the heads of its viewer was simply astounding..and I’m just talking Fox news not breitbart,Rush, infowars etc etc…just Fox news the most watched news channel of them all. Even dominating “liberal” media like a Boss…and lo and behold the Trumpith was a large part of that conspiracy flaming..

      http://mediamatters.org/research/2016/09/16/flashback-how-fox-news-promoted-trumps-birtherism/213152

But really..none of that matters it’s just the media right..you don’t believe anything it tells you anyway unless it’s agreeing with you.. so why get your panties in a twist now that your precious delicate POTUS respecting party that would never disrespect the office is being disrespected? *eye roll* Jesus you guys invented the disrespect of the Office..

“You lie” shouted at the POTUS in front in congress..

Btw has any Dem ever done that?

Or wait..you guys don’t need no stinking media to make overt threats on potus.you have your own congressmen to do that

      http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/joe-walsh-war-obama-black-lives-matter-dallas-article-1.2703883

And senators who pray for his death

      https://www.google.com/amp/m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_575af016e4b0ced23ca7e771/amp?client=ms-android-metropcs-us

But really..it’s more fun to have recurring regulars on your media channel do it for you

      https://mediamatters.org/blog/2014/01/03/foxs-benghazi-expert-endorsed-assassinating-oba/197411

..the channel with the most viewers out of them all remember.

The difference in those last 3 and the cnn piece on what would happen if…is that they specifically called for Obama’s death or outright threatened him….no blog on your site about them tho…weird I must be searching the wrong words…

Either way..the faux indignation your side is latching onto now like a runt on a teet..lol ..is simply an amazing pivot..I give it 5 stars!!!!!..

But until I see the Dems decide, en masse, to crash and burn this country if it’d ensure Trump is a one termer…like your potus respecting party did to O..

…”The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

      And

“We’re going to do everything — and I mean everything we can do — to kill it, stop it, slow it down, whatever we can.”

      http://www.politico.com/story/2010/10/the-gops-no-compromise-pledge-044311

      I’m not really gonna worry…

So let’s recap…we have the current potus saying ‘Revolution” bc the past potus lost popular vote. The current president along with a major media outlet calling the last potus illegitimate becuz he wasn’t even born here. Now that potus and his peers are whining about ppl talking about Russian influence, crowd size and this potus is still harping that pop vote doesn’t matter becuz his dick is bigger than everyone who’s ever had a dick when he was the one calling for a revolution the last time

Sorry..went on a tangent there…anyway. Back to recap.

You have Republicans threatening the last potus and praying for his death..and best of all a sitting congressmen screaming You Lie on the House floor and others promising to kill everything in potus agenda to ensure he’s a one term potus…

And yet you’re aghast at Trumps treatment…

Where was the twist in your panties for the last 8 years? Lol..stay golden ponyboy I would hate to come around and not see your alt-partisan showing.. 💋 *kiss*

It is nice to see you still going..once life slows down a little I’ll bring back the vsj and we can do this again..you can be my Hannity and I’ll be your Colmes..(only we’re better looking and smarter)…until then lets sit back and watch the gotterdammerung together over beers one night..;)

      • Always glad to welcome long time liberal foil EKG back. Frankly, I was curious as to your take on The Trumpening. However your insistence on not updating your blog left my curiosity unsatisfied. To again summarize the basic gist of my post, I think, as in many things now days, this time it’s different. The Democrats and the left are not merely having an overlong temper tantrum, but they no longer regard elections as legitimate if they give the wrong answer, and if you are a Hillary supporter, expecting another 8 years of getting more for your constituencies, and the state crowding out more and more of the private sphere, the election of Trump was definitely the wrong answer.

But I have to give you your props. You actually called Trump as a force to be reckoned with
        before I did.

I regard this state of affairs as extremely dangerous and see it as a series of cracks on representative government. “Democracies don’t end well” and I worry that ours is beginning the long march into obsolescence, like all of the democracies that have come before it.

As far as your tit for tat (which you claim isn’t) I’m still not seeing anything that compares to what the Democrats have been doing since the election. Admittedly, Trump’s 2012 tweet about calling for revolution is a little hair raising, but when you consider his position in the Republican Party at the time (none at all) and the coverage it got (zero) it seems a non-factor. Hate to break it to you, but in 2008 and 2012, the Republicans accepted the results of the election. You can’t really say the same of Democrats for 2016.

I’m not sure how exactly any of your other links are relevant. Ailes and Beck going after Obama? How does that compare ALL of the other networks and newspapers going after Bush, and of course, they’ve completely lost their collective tops over Trump. Oh and Fox wasn’t pushing the birther story. I don’t know why you would even bring that up, since as we both know, the first person I heard the birther story from was you. Yes, you were the original birther, the OB. Don’t give me the opportunity to bring that up…

“You lie” seems like small potatoes and “May his days be few; may another take his office!” seems less like a prayer for death then a desire for him to be out of office, however since you bring up death threats…Trump, he’s had a few, and what gets to the gist of the piece I wrote were the multiple death threats to the electors. In it’s own way, that’s far more dangerous to democracy than threats to Trump, Obama, or any other President, past or future. Threatening electors with death is a deliberate effort to intimidate to alter the results of the election. What I fear now is that may be part of the landscape from here on out.

I hope you are right, and this is really nothing but partisan blather, and the system is still sound and not under threat, but everything that’s happened since the election seems like brand new territory to me. Of course, I’m not old enough to remember the last time Democrats decided to go rogue when a Republican candidate won that they found unacceptable. Calexit aside, I’m hoping we can avoid another Civil War.
